Anamnesis

Spread the love

Ancient Greek

I am Jehovah. That is my name; I give my glory to no one else,Nor my praise to graven images.

Isaiah 42:8

The other day I was reading the notes of a famous author, Phillip K. Dick. Dick was a science fiction writer whose take on the world was that of an observer of human inconsistency which leads to human frailty. What I didn’t know about the man was, his philosophy was based on religious principles.

In one of his notes he indicated the Greek word “Anamnesis.” The word means, literally, “Loss of forgetfulness.” Think about that for a time. Loss of forgetfulness.

Each of us, the Bible allows us to understand, is imbued with a need to worship. Worship God. We are called to worship the One who created us and our planet and the universe. How wrong is it for some to worship other things as the pagans did who worshiped the Earth and not its Creator. It is similar to the Green Environmentalists whose religion seems to be Global Warming; a thing we can have little control over as the Earth does what is intended by the One who created it. When one steps back from what mankind has done and looks at volcanoes and geysers and vents spewing sulfurous gases since time began one needs to reconsider the reality of mankind’s impact versus the Earth itself.

For some of us it is the anamnesis, the loss of forgetfulness, which has allowed us to remember that we were meant to worship God and no other deity, nor place an earthly entity in His place. Remember the verse which said, I’m paraphrasing here: A man cuts down a tree, carves it into his god and then worships the tree that God created and not the creator Himself for formulating and producing that tree. We see this in the green movement and that movement has become a religion; a false religion and an offense to God.

And, I’m just scratching the surface here. We on Earth have steered so far off course that we may be called to task for improper navigation when all we need to see us through is watching us from above. Thankfully, we still have time to correct course and get back on the narrow line which leads to Him.

“You must not make for yourself a carved image or a form like anything that is in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth.  You must not bow down to them nor be enticed to serve them, for I, Jehovah your God, am a God who requires exclusive devotion, bringing punishment for the error of fathers upon sons, upon the third generation and upon the fourth generation of those who hate me. . .
