You have heard of Lazarus? Lazarus and his family were great friends of Jesus. It appears that Jesus had visited the family as friends many times and knew them quite well. At the time Lazarus became ill, and eventually died, was across the Jordan River. The two sisters of Lazarus sent a message to Jesus telling Him that their brother was deathly ill:
3 So his sisters sent a message to him, saying: “Lord, see! the one you have affection for is sick.”John 11: 3
Jesus got their message but elected to wait two days before going to the family. In the meantime, Lazarus succumbed to his illness and was placed in a tomb. By the time Jesus came to them Lazarus had been dead four days.
The Bible can be read or the Bible can be studied. Reading it gives a cursory knowledge but studying it shows the deeper meaning and exposes that each word written has weight and meaning. All of these words lead toward an end. None of them are superfluous. They are there to demonstrate love and deeper consideration of how God works and why He does what He does. He has opened His heart and mind to us to the extent we can understand His purpose. It is a gift to each of us and we really need to understand this gift.
Jesus arrived on His time and schedule and to His purpose. After four days Lazarus’ body had started to decay. This was not a problem for He who is going to resurrect those whose judgement is favorable.
Then Jesus, after groaning again within himself, came to the tomb. It was, in fact, a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus said: “Take the stone away.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to him: “Lord, by now he must smell, for it has been four days.” 40 Jesus said to her: “Did I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”+ 41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus raised his eyes heavenward+ and said: “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 True, I knew that you always hear me; but I spoke on account of the crowd standing around, so that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice: “Lazʹa·rus, come out!” 44 The man who had been dead came out with his feet and hands bound with wrappings, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them: “Free him and let him go.”John 11: 38
Lazarus lived again. He was whole and healthy. It was the sign recorded of the power Jesus has over death through His Father Jehovah God.
This is our promise from Jehovah as exercised by His Son Jesus for all who follow Him. This is the reason that Bible understanding is tantamount to salvation. Peace.
